COVID-19 의 치료에 렘데시비르(Remdesivir) 사용 : 

미국 미주리(Missouri) 주(州) 세인트루이스(Saint Louis )에 위치한 세인트루이스대학교(Saint Louis University) 전염병학과(Department of infectious diseases) 부교수(associate professor) Dr. Sarah George, M.D 는 COVID-19 의 치료에 한줄기 희망을 안겨주었다. Dr. George 는 세인트루이스대학교(Saint Louis University)의 백신개발연구소(Center for Vaccine Development)에서 최초로 렘데시비르(Remdesivir)를 COVID-19 환자들에게 사용한 의사이다. 그녀는 2020년 4월 29일 백악관(White House) 에서 다음과 같이 설명했다.   

."We saw someCOVID-19 patients  who were very, very ill, who did get better, The data shows that remdesivir has a clear cut significant  positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery. This is really quite important, It's not a cure. But  it is encouraging." 이라고 말했다.  다시 말하면 "우한폐렴 증상이 엄중한 환자에게 렘데시비르(Remdesivir)를 투여했는데 증상이 경감되었다. 수집된 데이터(data)에 보면  렘데시비르(Remdesivir)는 우한폐렴환자들의 회복시간을 단축시켜 주는 성과에 있어서 매우 긍정적이고 괄목할 만한 효과를 나타내었다. 이것은 매우 중요한 일임과 동시에 고무적인 사건이다. 렘데시비르(Remdesivir)는 COVID-19 를 치유해 주는 약은 아니지만 상당히 고무적이다." 는 뜻이다. 

미국 보건복지부(HHS)의 기관인 미국 국립보건원(NIH)을 구성하는 27개 기관 및 센터 중 하나인 미국 국립알레르기·전염병연구소(National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIAID)의 Dr. Anthony Fauci 는 "렘데시비르(Remdesivir)는 우한폐렴 환자들이 회복될 때 까지 병원내에 체류하는 기간을  위약대비(僞藥對比) 15일 에서 11일로 단축시켜 주었으며 사망율(mortality rate)은 위약대비  11.6% 로 부터  8% 로 강저시켜 주었다.  그후 모든 플라시보환자( placebo patients)들에게 렘데시비르(Remdesivir)를 복용시키고 있다. "고 설명했다.   

Dr. George 는 "people have reason to be excited about this potential treatment. We think we can save lives with this drug, That means a lot. But we really need prevention, we really need vaccine." 이라고 말했다. 다시 말하면 "대부분의 사람들은 렘데시비르(Remdesivir)의  COVID-19 치료 가능성에 관하여 흥분하고 있다. 우리는 렘데시비르(Remdesivir)를 사용하여 환자의 생명을 구할 수 있다고 생각한다.   이것은 절대로 작은 사건이 아니며 큰 의미를 갖고있다. 우리는 COVID-19 의 예방이 필요하며 진정으로 백신이 필요하다." 는 뜻이다.      

또 미국국립알레르기·전염병연구소(National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases : NIAID) 소장이자 미국 코로나바이러스 태스크포스팀(Task Force Team)의 일원인 안토니파우시(Anthony S. Fauci) 박사는 “More studies are still needed, but Dr. Fauci said remdesivir will now be "standard care" for anyone in the hospital for COVID-19, while the company that makes it, Gilead Sciences, tries to ramp up production.” 이라고 말했다, 다시 말하면 “COVID-19 치료를 위한 렘데시비르(Remdesivir)의 사용에 관하여 더 많은 연구가 필요하지만 렘데시비르(Remdesivir)를 이제부터 병원에 입원되어 있는 COVID-19 환자들의 표준진료의 한 방법으로 사용할 것이다. 그리하여 길리어드회사에서는 이후 렘데시비르(Remdesivir)의 대량 양산에 들어갈 예정이다.” 는 뜻이다. 

 미국 캘리포니아(California) 주(州)의 포스터시(Foster City)에 본사를 둔 길리어드사이언스(Gilead Sciences, Inc.) 생약제약회사(biopharmaceutical company)는 HIV 와 B형간염(hepatitis B)과 C형간염(hepatitis C)과 인프루엔자(influenza) 등의 치료에 사용하는 항바이러스 의약품(antiviral drugs) 제조회사이다.
